There are competing theories that explain hypnosis and related phenomena.

Theories of an altered state see hypnosis as an altered state of mind or trance, marked by a level of awareness different from the ordinary state of consciousness.

Non-state theories, on the other hand, see hypnosis as, in many ways, a type of placebo effect, a redefinition of interaction with a therapist, or a form of an imaginary role-playing act.

It is said that during hypnosis, a person has increased focus and concentration.

Hypnotized subjects are said to exhibit a heightened response to suggestions.

Hypnosis usually begins with hypnotic induction, including a series of preliminary instructions and suggestions.

The therapeutic use of hypnotism is referred to as “hypnotherapy,” while its use as a form of entertainment for the audience is known as “stage hypnosis.”

The stage of hypnosis is often performed by mentalists practicing the artistic form of mentalism.
