About Dutch

Dutch is the name of the official language spoken by more than 20 million people in the Netherlands and in Flanders, the Northern part of Belgium – together they are sometimes called the Low Countries.

Contrary to what many people would have you believe, particularly the Dutch, it is a relatively easy language to learn, particularly for speakers of English, because of the many similarities in vocabulary and the regularities of the language.

This 1-hour digital taster course is for beginners who are new to the Michel Thomas Method. Learn over 50 essential words at the heart of Dutch and how to put them together to make yourself understood.

From the very beginning you will be able to construct simple phrases by listening and thinking out answers for yourself. During the course, you will join Michel Thomas Method teachers and native speakers Els Van Geyte and Cobie Adkins-de Jong and 2 students in a live lesson.

The course will take about 3-4 hours to complete and is available to stream or download via the Michel Thomas Method Library app. It is the first hour of the Foundation course.

Cobie Adkins-de Jong is a native speaker who has taught both Dutch and German at universities and language centres for many years.

Els Van Geyte is a native speaker and an Applied Linguist who has taught Dutch in Further Education in the UK for many years.

Foundation Dutch

LISTEN, ABSORB AND SPEAK DUTCH NATURALLY

Foundation Dutch breaks the language down into building blocks in such a way that you listen, speak, respond and move on to ever-more-complex sentences. During this 8-hour beginner digital course you will become the third student and participate actively in the class.

Within the first hour you will be able to construct simple sentences. By the end of the course, you will have the confidence to understand and speak basic Dutch. You will learn at your own pace, pausing and repeating where necessary, and complete the course in about 20-30 hours. This course is available to stream or download via the Michel Thomas Method Library app.

This course incorporates the Start course.

Intermediate Dutch

LISTEN, ABSORB AND SPEAK DUTCH NATURALLY

Intermediate Dutch is the next step in your language journey and follows on from the Michel Thomas Method Foundation Dutch Course. You will join native speakers and Michel Thomas Method teachers Els Van Geyte and Cobie Adkins-de Jong, along with 2 students, in a live lesson, learning from their mistakes and their successes. Your understanding of Dutch will deepen as your knowledge expands to covering things like past, present and future tenses, all introduced in simple building blocks with the same no-pens, no memorizing method. This digital course will be completed in 15-20 hours and is available to stream or download via the Michel Thomas Method Library app.
